Tooth Extraction

What Is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is the process of completely removing a tooth from the mouth.
It is usually performed when the tooth is too damaged to be treated, infected, or negatively affecting the jaw structure.
It is always considered a last resort, and if possible, other treatments to preserve the tooth are reviewed first.

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

  • Advanced cavities and teeth that cannot be saved with root canal treatment
  • Severely loose, infected, or bone-loss-affected teeth
  • Fractured teeth that cannot be repaired or have lost their function
  • Extractions needed before orthodontic treatment due to jaw crowding
  • Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth
  • Teeth surrounded by recurring infections

How Is Tooth Extraction Performed?

The area is numbed with local anesthesia before the procedure.
Once the patient’s comfort is ensured, the tooth is carefully separated from the jawbone and removed.
In some cases, minimal intervention in the surrounding bone tissue may be necessary.
If it is a surgical extraction (such as impacted wisdom teeth), an incision and stitches may also be required.

After the extraction, the area is cleaned, bleeding is controlled, and stitches are placed if needed.

What to Expect After Extraction?

  • Mild bleeding for the first few hours is normal
  • Mild pain and sensitivity may occur after the numbness wears off
  • Healing typically begins within a few days, with full recovery in 1–2 weeks

Personalized aftercare instructions are provided to ensure a healthier recovery process.

What Should Be Considered?

  • Do not spit or rinse the mouth for the first 24 hours
  • Avoid hot foods and beverages
  • Do not use a straw or smoke to prevent dislodging the blood clot
  • Maintain oral hygiene but clean the extraction area gently
  • Use prescribed painkillers and antibiotics regularly if recommended by your dentist

Is Tooth Extraction a Painful Procedure?

No. Tooth extraction performed under local anesthesia is not painful.
You may only feel pressure or movement during the procedure.
In surgical extractions, mild pain or swelling may occur afterwards, but it can be managed effectively.

Should Wisdom Teeth Be Extracted?

Not all wisdom teeth need to be extracted.
However, if impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth cause problems such as cavities, gum infections, or pressure on neighboring teeth, extraction is recommended.
These teeth are usually removed through a surgical procedure.
