Root Canal Treatment

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure performed when the live tissues (nerves and blood vessels) inside the tooth become inflamed or damaged.
The goal is to save the natural tooth without extracting it.
The infected tissue inside the root canal is removed, the canal is sterilized, and it is sealed with a special filling material.

This way, the chewing function of the tooth is preserved and it can continue to be used for many years.

When Is Root Canal Treatment Needed?

  • Advanced cavities
  • Trauma or fractures reaching the inner part of the tooth
  • Persistent toothache, especially worsening at night
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swelling or abscess formation on the gums
  • Failure of a previous root canal treatment

If these symptoms are present, root canal treatment should not be delayed.

How Is Root Canal Treatment Performed?

  1. The tooth is numbed with local anesthesia.
  2. Access to the tooth is gained using special instruments, and the infected pulp (nerve and blood vessel tissue) is removed.
  3. The root canals are shaped and disinfected with special tools.
  4. The canals are sealed tightly with root canal filling material.
  5. If necessary, a filling or crown is placed on top.

In some cases, it can be completed in a single session; for complex cases, multiple sessions may be required.

Is There Pain After the Treatment?

Mild sensitivity or pain during chewing may occur, especially within the first few days after the procedure.
This condition is temporary and can usually be managed with painkillers.

If the pain persists for more than a few days, it is necessary to consult your dentist again.

How Long Does the Tooth Last?

After successful root canal treatment, the tooth can be used healthily for many years.
However, regular dental care and check-ups are very important.
In some cases, placing a protective crown over the treated tooth may be necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to extract the tooth instead of having root canal treatment?

Whenever possible, preserving the natural tooth is always more valuable.
If a tooth is extracted, it must be replaced with a prosthesis; otherwise, jaw structure may deteriorate.

Is sedation necessary during root canal treatment?

No, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia. It is carried out in a completely numbed area.

What happens if root canal treatment fails?

It can be treated with retreatment (re-doing the root canal) or surgical procedures if necessary.
Although the failure rate is low, regular follow-ups by the dentist are very important.
