Dental Filling

What Is a Dental Filling?

A dental filling is a treatment method used to restore missing tooth structure damaged by decay or trauma.
The aim is to restore the tooth both aesthetically and functionally and to prevent further damage.

Filling procedures are essential for maintaining both chewing comfort and overall oral health.

When Is a Filling Needed?

  • Cavities caused by tooth decay
  • Broken or leaking old fillings
  • Tooth fractures caused by trauma
  • Sensitivity to cold, heat, or sweets
  • Controlling early-stage decay before it progresses

A filling should be applied early to prevent tooth extraction and avoid the need for more advanced treatments.

How Is a Dental Filling Performed?

  1. Local anesthesia is applied if necessary to prevent pain during the procedure.
  2. Decayed or damaged tissue is removed.
  3. The cavity is shaped and filled with a filling material.
  4. The filling is shaped and polished according to the natural tooth structure to complete the procedure.

The procedure usually takes 20–30 minutes and is typically completed in a single session.

What Types of Fillings Are Used?

Composite (White) Fillings
Aesthetically compatible with tooth color. Especially preferred for front teeth and visible areas.

Amalgam (Silver) Fillings
A long-lasting and durable material. Nowadays, it is less commonly preferred.

Glass Ionomer Fillings
Release fluoride and are generally used for temporary fillings or in children.

The choice of filling depends on the location of the tooth, chewing forces, and aesthetic expectations.

Post-Filling Care Instructions

  • Avoid hard foods for the first few hours
  • If local anesthesia was used, avoid eating until the numbness wears off
  • Mild sensitivity may occur for a few days after the filling
  • If needed, the height of the filling can be adjusted under the dentist’s supervision

How Long Does a Filling Last?

When properly applied and maintained with regular oral care, a filling can last around 5–10 years.
However, the tooth’s location, chewing habits, and material used directly affect its lifespan.

Regular dental check-ups are important to monitor the condition of the filling.

Our Approach to Dental Fillings at CeDent

We view dental fillings not just as “filling cavities” but as interventions that protect and rebuild the tooth.
Even with small cavities, we aim to intervene early and preserve the tooth for the long term.
During the procedure, we strive to achieve the best possible aesthetic and functional results.

When necessary, we ensure comfort with local anesthesia and clearly inform patients about post-procedure care.
