Tartar Cleaning

What Is Tartar?

Tartar is a mineralized layer formed by the hardening of bacterial plaque accumulated on the teeth over time.
These deposits, which cannot be removed by brushing and oral care, can lead to gum disease, bad breath, and cavities.

Tartar usually accumulates at the gum line and may cause gum recession over time.
If not cleaned regularly, it can lead to problems that may progress to tooth loss.

Why Is Tartar Cleaning Necessary?

  • Prevents gum diseases
  • Reduces bad breath
  • Stops gum bleeding
  • Slows down gum recession
  • Is one of the fundamental steps to maintain oral health

It also eliminates the yellow, dull, and unhealthy appearance on the teeth for a more aesthetic look.

How Is Cleaning Performed?

  1. Special ultrasonic devices are used by the dentist
  2. The vibrating tips of the device break down and remove the tartar on the tooth surfaces
  3. Spaces between teeth and hard-to-reach areas are thoroughly cleaned
  4. At the end of the procedure, teeth are polished to achieve a smooth surface

The procedure typically takes 20–30 minutes and is painless.
In advanced cases, it may be completed over several sessions.

How Often Should It Be Done?

Each individual’s saliva composition and oral care habits are different.
The general recommendation is to have tartar cleaning every 6 months.
It may be needed more frequently in individuals who smoke, do not use dental floss regularly, or are undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Does Tartar Cleaning Damage the Teeth?

No.
When performed with the correct equipment and technique, it does not harm the teeth or gums.
On the contrary, it helps protect tooth enamel over time and improves gum health.

Issues like tooth mobility or gum recession may seem to appear after cleaning, but these conditions already existed and merely became visible.

Our Approach to Tartar Cleaning at CeDent

We view tartar cleaning not just as an “aesthetic procedure,” but as a fundamental part of preventive oral health.
Before the procedure, your gum condition is evaluated, and if necessary, additional treatment plans are prepared.
Our dentists explain the process in detail and provide clear post-treatment instructions.

We also review your oral hygiene habits together to help prevent new tartar formation.

What Should Be Considered After the Procedure?

  • Sensitivity to hot and cold may occur for the first few hours
  • Avoid staining substances such as smoking, coffee, and tea for 24 hours
  • Brush twice a day and use dental floss and/or interdental brushes consistently
  • Avoid overly vigorous brushing on the first night
